For subscribing to each such group please follow these 3 steps (but the first2 only once):

1) Create your new Google account with your exiting email account and then

2) Create your Gmail account (choose your desired login name x for having the x@gmail.com account) and then

3) with your direct (Gmail) login name subscribe to the-comcomists@ooglegroups.com (by clicking the "apply for approval" bottom)
when you go to http://groups.google.com/group/the-comcomists/subscribe
This way you by switching the-comcomists to you desired group you could try subscribing to it
